Your Liver Doesn’t Need a Detox

By Dr. Kathryn Dundas, MD, CCFP
Sublime Life | The Journal

This week, a patient asked me how to detox their liver.
And I realized we’ve been taught to cleanse the body instead of understand it.
So my real question was: what signals is their system sending them?
Because the liver rarely needs a detox. It needs support.

SUBLIME LIFE
LIVER OPTIMIZATION GUIDE

First, A Reframe

Your liver does not need a “detox.”

It is already your primary detoxification organ — working 24 hours a day to process hormones, metabolize nutrients, regulate glucose, clear alcohol, and neutralize environmental exposures.
When someone asks how to “detox the liver,” what we’re really asking is:

  • Is it inflamed?
  • Is it fatty?
  • Is insulin signaling off?
  • Is alcohol intake too high?
  • Is the stress axis dysregulated?

Optimization is different than cleansing.
We support function — we don’t shock the system.

LIVER OPTIMIZATION PROTOCOL

Evidence-Informed | Metabolically Grounded | Sustainable

  1. Lower Inflammatory Load

If liver enzymes are elevated or fatty liver is suspected:

  • Pause alcohol for 4–6 weeks
  • Remove ultra-processed foods
  • Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugar
  • Increase fiber (25–35g/day)

Why it matters:
Most liver dysfunction today is metabolic — not toxic.

  1. Stabilize Insulin Signaling
The liver is deeply tied to blood sugar regulation.
    Support insulin sensitivity with:
  • Resistance training 2–3x/week
  • 10-minute walks after meals
  • Adequate sleep (7–8 hours)
  • Consider targeted metabolic support if needed

In some patients with insulin resistance or weight gain, GLP-1 microdosing may be appropriate under supervision.

3. Support Detoxification Pathways (Without “Detoxing”)

The liver relies on Phase I and Phase II pathways.

It needs:

  • Protein (1.2–1.6 g/kg body weight)
  • B vitamins (especially B6, B12, folate)
  • Magnesium
  • Glycine
  • Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, arugula, cauliflower)
  • Polyphenols (berries, green tea)

This is nourishment — not cleansing.

4. Improve Bile Flow

Healthy bile flow helps eliminate hormones and waste.

Support with:

  • Hydration
  • Bitter greens
  • Adequate dietary fat (not zero-fat diets)
  • Daily bowel movements

Constipation increases recirculation of toxins and estrogen metabolites.

5. Support Mitochondrial Health

The liver is metabolically demanding tissue.

Consider:

  • Creatine
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Adequate choline
  • Strength training
  • Circadian rhythm alignment

What We Do NOT Recommend

  • Juice cleanses
  • Extreme fasting while stressed
  • Random “liver detox” powders
  • Coffee enemas
  • Severe calorie restriction

Detox culture is often marketing — not medicine.

When We Investigate Further

We assess:

  • ALT, AST, GGT
  • Ferritin
  • Fasting insulin
  • Lipid panel
  • HbA1c
  • Ultrasound if indicated

Because true optimization begins with data.

Final Thought

The liver thrives on rhythm, stability, and metabolic balance.

Not extremes.

Support the system.

Remove the overload.

Let the body do what it was designed to do.

Practitioner Pick

Graphene Sauna or Red Light Bed

If we’re speaking about liver optimization, we’re really speaking about mitochondrial signaling and systemic inflammation.

Our Graphene Sauna supports:

  • Circulation
  • Heat shock protein activation
  • Improved metabolic flexibility
  • Detox through sweat (secondary benefit — not primary mechanism)

Our Red Light Bed supports:

  • Mitochondrial ATP production
  • Cellular repair
  • Inflammatory modulation
  • Tissue recovery

Both are supportive tools — not “detox hacks.”

They work because they improve cellular resilience.

Product Pick

Vital Omega (Currently in Production)

If we’re supporting liver health from the inside, omega-3 fatty acids matter.

Vital Omega is different because:

  • High-EPA formula for inflammatory modulation
  • Molecularly distilled for purity
  • Clinically relevant dosing
  • Designed to integrate into our Longevity Wheel framework

Omega-3s help:

  • Reduce hepatic inflammation
  • Improve triglycerides
  • Support insulin sensitivity
  • Support mitochondrial membrane health
